Field Trips 2024
Field trips (guided geological walks led by an expert) are graded gentle G (mainly on paths with no steep or rocky areas), moderate M (8-9 km with some rough ground and slopes) and hard H (10 km or more with steep slopes). Itineraries may have to be altered at short notice; check email or website before setting off.
Sunday 21st April A geology walk from Newbiggin-on-Lune to Bents and Brownber

Grade G The walk is across fields and maybe muddy at times. 2.5 miles 2.5 hours

Meet 10.30 Horton-in Ribblesdale, Park at side of road to quarry, Crag Hill Road SD 8046 7258 - -BD24 0HN - meeting point by the pedestrian crossing over the railway. Two cars will be left earlier in Austwick to shuttle drivers back later.

Wednesday 24th July White Scar Quarry
On Wednesday 24 July we'll visit White Scar Quarry, Whitbarrow to look at the local limestone sequence. There's a Cumbria Geoconservation leaflet about it here. We’ll meet at the Mill Side cross roads SD 4521 8395 at 6.30pm where there is plenty of roadside parking. The itinerary is about 3 miles and will take about 2 hours to complete. Afterwards there will be opportunity to visit the nearby Derby Arms for refreshments.
Saturday 27th July Shap Pink Quarry - Meet Quarry at 10.00am
'The Shap granite: a small granite with a big story' - the aim is to examine the field relations that help reconstruct the long journey of magma from the deep crust as described by Miles and Branney in the new GA Guide to Cumbria, 2023.
Attendees are limited to a maximum of 16. Please ensure you register and note the requirement for hard hat and hi-viz vest.
