Welcome to the website of
the Westmorland Geological Society founded in 1973
The Society is open to anyone who is interested in Earth Sciences and no prior knowledge of the subject is required. Non-members can attend any event for a small fee (£2.00 per session).
There is a winter programme of lectures in Kendal, on the third Wednesday of each month. In the summer, field excursions are organised. These excursions are to places of geological interest. All are within a reasonable distance of Kendal. For details of the events that have been arranged for this year, please use the EVENTS link on the left or click here.
The society is now on Facebook. Click here to visit it.
Our next event is a lecture on the 20th of November. It will be given by Dr. Steven Crowley,
University of Liverpool and is entitled "Haematite Mineralisation at the
Margins of the Irish Sea Basin." For more information about this lecture click here.
The PAST EVENTS link on the left gives details of the fieldtrips, lectures & workshops that the Society run. They are not meant to be a complete record as the society publishes annual ‘Proceedings’ which include full write-ups, with illustrations, of all our lectures & fieldtrips for that year. Proceedings are free to members of the Society.
Workshops were started in January 2018 as an ‘extra’ activity, so there is a small charge to cover room costs. They are advertised at the Society's lecture the week before the workshop & by email to members. Visitors are welcome. They are generally aimed at beginners, though may build on previous workshops. Leaders are society members who are generous in sharing their knowledge.
